We are not left on our own to whittle away at love according to our speculations. No, we have been given a very specific model: Jesus. Unlike anyone else—any religious figure or literary hero—Jesus is a true and living example of perfect love. If we dedicate ourselves to Him, our love might still be lumpy and cracked, troubled and incomplete, but it will be increasingly Christlike.

Specimen #2: My first serious college crush. I was in my sophomore year of college at the time, and she was out of my league in every way. The previous summer, I had sold M&M’S packets in the snack shack at the local pool; she had lived in Milan. She was beautiful and boasted a long résumé; I was good at Nintendo and rarely cut my hair.
