While this chapter covers introductory or fundamental topics, the remainder of the book focuses on general and specific design approaches for achieving multiband operation with an integrated antenna. These approaches include discussions and examples of planar (wire and patch) antennas, multiband fractal antennas, the planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA), and so forth. Prior to the specific details of these advanced design approaches, this section discusses the basic performance properties of the wire monopole antenna, its transition into an inverted-L antenna (ILA), an inverted-F antenna (IFA), and finally into the PIFA.

The latter evolved into IS-136 and is often referred to as 33 34 Multiband Multisystem Antennas in Handsets D-AMPS (digital AMPS) or TDMA (since it employs a time division multiple access scheme). GSM allowed global operation in the original TACS band from 880 to 960 MHz, and then later in a band from 1,710 to 1,880 MHz, leading to a requirement for dual-band operation. However, these frequency bands were not available worldwide: in particular, a different band (1,850–1,980 MHz) was utilized in the United States for IS-54, IS-136, a third system, IS-95, and eventually GSM.

When a relatively large value of parallel inductance is connected at the feed point, there is only a marginal change in the antenna’s total feed-point impedance. 14 19 Impedance properties of the inverted-L antenna. 15. 15 Smith chart illustrating the movement of impedance when a parallel inductance is connected at the antenna’s feed point. This is the basic behavior associated with impedance matching an inverted-L using a parallel inductor. 45 GHz. If the parallel inductance is added directly at the feed point, the matched frequency will typically be less than the resonant frequency.
